BLOG COMING SOON
Know Before You Go
- You will be in complete awe, from the moment you get into Milford Sound!
- We recommend going on the morning cruise as it's less crowded because most people do the afternoon cruise
- There are multiple companies doing the cruise through the Sounds
- If you have time (and extra cash), the cruise takes you to an underwater observatory
- Take a rain jacket if you want to get up close and personal to the waterfalls... you will get soaked! Milford Sound has a huge amount of rainfall each year, so it's worth bringing a rain jacket anyway as it would be a shame to miss out on seeing as much scenery as you could because you didn't take one!
- You actually want to have the rainiest day possible here as the mountains become ALIVE with waterfalls! Keep an eye on this weather website to see what weather you can expect
- Don't forget your camera!!
- Give yourself PLENTY of time to get there as there are sooo many places to stop along the road
- Check in is 20-minutes prior to the cruise leaving. This is all inside a building, which is perfect on a cold or rainy day, although there aren't a huge amount of chairs to chill on
- Always check the road status before heading to Milford Sound, as the road may be closed. You can check it here
How To Get To Milford Sound
If you don't have a car, you can bus or fly from Te Anau or Queenstown
Parking At Milford Sound
- The parking here is quite expensive at $10 per hour! Only credit card and debit cards are accepted and it is a ticketless system. Click here for updated info and prices. We put in 4 hours for parking which allowed us time to do the cruise and not rush there and back.
- The main carpark is a 10 - 15 minute walk to the cruise terminal, otherwise there is a free car parking area at Deepwater Basin which is a 20-30 minute walk from the cruise terminal. Parking here is limited and there used to be a free bus service going to the terminal but as of January 2024 it's not currently running. This is a good option if you plan to do the cruise and explore the area a little more to see the swing and some waterfalls.
- Be sure to lock your car and keep all valuables out of sight!
