SOUTH ISLAND, NEW ZEALAND
The South Island of New Zealand is the larger of the two main islands of New Zealand and it's known for its beautiful landscapes and natural areas, including mountains, forests, lakes, and coastlines.
The South Island is divided into several regions, including the Canterbury region, known for its agricultural industry and the city of Christchurch; the Otago region, known for its gold mining history and the city of Dunedin; and the Southland region, known for its dairy farming and the city of Invercargill.
The South Island is home to several national parks, including Fiordland National Park, home to the beautiful fiords of Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound; Abel Tasman National Park, known for its beautiful beaches and coastal walks; and Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park, home to New Zealand's highest mountain (one of our favourite places in the world!!).
Overall, the South Island of New Zealand offers a diverse range of experiences and attractions for travellers, from outdoor adventures and natural beauty to cultural and historical sites.

WALKS & HIKES
IN THE SOUTH ISLAND
Oooh have we got some goodies for you! Walking and hiking in the South Island is one of the best experiences we have had in the whole of New Zealand. The mountains, valleys and lakes are absolutely stunning and offer the most magical views that you can imagine! There are short hikes to hikes that last daaaays but luckily for you, we're just sticking to the short and day hikes (for now)!
MT JOHN
CANTERBURY Mt John offers one of the best views in NZ. Walk around the summit or have a coffee at the cafe. Prepare to say WOW!

COWANS HILL TRACK
CANTERBURY A beautiful and peaceful walk up the back of Tekapo, full of lupins in Nov - Jan if you go down the right track. Great mountain views!

TSS WAVERLY LAGOON WALK
MARLBOROUGH The Wairau Lagoon offers a 6km round trip across the salt marsh to reach and explore the TSS Waverly shipwreck.

WITHER HILLS FARM PARK
MARLBOROUGH Over 60kms of walking and biking tracks to enjoy while being surrounded by rolling, steep country hills and incredible views.

HOOKER VALLEY TRACK
AUCKLAND An easy track for the family to enjoy incredible mountain and lake views all year round. The kids will enjoy crossing the 3 swing bridges.

CULLEN POINT LOOKOUT
MARLBOROUGH A quick 10-minute walk from the carpark through native NZ forest, showing incredible views of Mahau Sound and beyond

Oh hello the bluest lake in New Zealand! You'll find it right here in the South Island as well as many other beautiful lakes that are breath taking. The beaches in the South Island are in a class of their own - some are like a little paradise, while others are rugged and have the best gemstones or are full of cute seals!
LAKE PUKAKI
CANTERBURY This is the bluest lake in New Zealand and is surrounded by the Southern Alps and has a view of the world famous Mt Cook.

MOERAKI BOULDERS
CANTERBURY A west coast beach scattered with big ol' round boulders waiting to be climbed. Best to be viewed at low tide.

CANTERBURY An absolute paradise in the South Island where you can throw rocks, swim in the clear water soak up the mountain views.

EXPERIENCES
IN THE SOUTH ISLAND
The South Island offers a range of experiences, including hiking, mountain biking, skiing, epic playgrounds, museums, train rides and whitewater rafting, which can be a great way to get active and experience the beauty of the region. While we're not so much into whitewater rafting (been there, done that, never again!), we had some pretty cool experiences that we want to share with you.
